Many people have been asking us about why leaves change colours and why they fall from the tree. The layer accomplishes two things. First it discards the leaf cleanly when the leaf is no longer of any use to the tree. Second, it forms a scab on the tree side of the cut, so that the tree does not lose precious water in the wintertime when water is very scarce. Although the abscission layer is born with the leaf, thankfully it does not kick into action until the end of the growing season. Then the abscission layer grows and strangles the water supply to the leaf. It is a beautiful system, tuned to our climate and position on the planet. It all works to save the tree from the desert-like water conditions that prevail in the winter.Oh, and the abscission layer also contributes to the fabulous colours we enjoy in the fall. |
