biological diversity
Switzerland is home to some 10,000 plant species (plants, lichens and mushrooms) and around 40,000 species of animals, 83 species of mammals. Among the latter, most are surprisingly bats or rodents.

The total number of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and wild fish which live and reproduce in Switzerland has remained stable between 1997 and 2007.

A small number of species have disappeared, but the deficit was filled by the arrival of new species or recurrence of old species in Switzerland. Some species are parking their own volition in Switzerland (eg wolf), while others have been subject to reintroduction.
In the past, the diversity of species on Swiss territory has fluctuated considerably. It is believed that it reached a maximum in the second half of the 19th century.

Switzerland has signed the UN Convention on Biological Diversity of 1994. This international agreement aims to reverse the decline of species of animals, plants and other organisms.

Reviewing the history of four approaches to conserve strength, a botanist at the University of Cape Town, concluded that current conservation efforts incorporate elements of each philosophy, which results in a new ethic of conservation, which employs alternative criteria for state and control of protected areas, and identify the importance of man's influence in areas of desert.

The diversity of species in different areas along the St. Lawrence, while interesting to hear the theoretical point of view, not enough to protect biodiversity. The conservation requires, indeed, considering the number, distribution and population status of each constituent species in these territories. Of the 1703 species vascular located along the river, 66 have priority Quebec maximum (S1) and their presence in Quebec is very precarious, 103 are considered precarious (S2) and 30, as unusual (S3) ( CDPNQ, 1999). Because of their rarity or their precarious status of these species are considered priority. In Quebec, these species are mainly rare plants, confined to one province on earth. Their rarity held for the most because they reach the Quebec limit their range or, less frequently, that their habitat is rare.

The species of vascular interest of Saint-Laurent are concentrated mostly in the Lowlands. D'affinity temperate, 114 of these species are confined to the territory. In addition, the occurrence of several species known as thermophiles, whose limit is around the archipelago Hochelaga and Lake Saint-Pierre, is due to contributions made to the southern favour of natural flyways that are Saint-Laurent higher and Richelieu. To this end, parcels with the highest values of the composite index prioritize vascular species are found primarily in the Montreal area (Mount Royal: 0290; Senneville: 0182; island Perrot: 0172; St. Helena Island: 0164 ).
